Dark matter in the inner parts of barred galaxies: The data
This paper presents surface photometry (B,V,I,J,H,K) and Hαrotation curves of 27 isolated spiral galaxies. The final goal is toobtain the mass distribution of a sample of isolated spiral galaxies inorder to model their gas kinematics. This is then compared to theobserved rotation curve, to determine the necessity of a dark halo inthe inner parts (Perez et al. 2004, A&A, 424, 799). The azimuthallyaveraged radial surface brightness profiles and the integratedmagnitudes obtained from ellipse fitting are given for each of thesample galaxies. The ellipse fitting technique applied to the lightdistribution also allowed us to obtain the size of the bar, and theinclination and position angle of the outer isophotes that allow thegalaxy deprojection. Using these profiles, 1-D disk-bulge decompositionwas performed to obtain the disk scale-length and the bulge effectiveradius for the different bands. Through the fitting of a parametricfunction to the observed rotation curve, the maximum rotational velocityand the corresponding radius was obtained. The correlation between thebulge and disk parameters is in agreement with previous studies (de Jong1996a, A&A, 313, 45; Márquez & Moles 1999, A&A, 344,421; Baggett et al. 1998, AJ, 116, 1626). Regarding the Kormendyrelation (Kormendy 1977, ApJ, 218, 333), in agreement with de Jong, nocorrelation between the bulge effective radius and its surfacebrightness is found, possibly due to the small range of bulge magnitudescovered. We find a smaller scatter in the structural relations whencompared to non-isolated samples in agreement with Márquez &Moles (1999). Finally, a correlation between the disk scale-length andthe bar size is observed, possibly reflecting the rapid growth of a bar.

Galaxy interactions - poor starburst triggers. III. A study of a complete sample of interacting galaxies
We report on a study of tidally triggered star formation in galaxiesbased on spectroscopic/photometric observations in the optical/near-IRof a magnitude limited sample of 59 systems of interacting and merginggalaxies and a comparison sample of 38 normal isolated galaxies. From astatistical point of view the sample gives us a unique opportunity totrace the effects of tidally induced star formation. In contrast toresults from previous investigations, our global UBV colours do notsupport a significant enhancement of starforming activity in theinteracting/merging galaxies. We also show that, contrary to previousclaims, there is no significantly increased scatter in the colours ofArp galaxies as compared to normal galaxies. We do find support formoderate (a factor of ~ 2-3) increase in star formation in the verycentres of the interacting galaxies of our sample, contributingmarginally to the total luminosity. The interacting and in particularthe merging galaxies are characterized by increased far infrared(hereafter FIR) luminosities and temperatures that weakly correlate withthe central activity. The LFIR/LB ratio however,is remarkably similar in the two samples, indicating that truestarbursts normally are not hiding in the central regions of the FIRluminous cases. The gas mass-to-luminosity ratio in optical-IR ispractically independent of luminosity, lending further support to thepaucity of true massive starburst galaxies triggered byinteractions/mergers. We estimate the frequency of such cases to be ofthe order of ~ 0.1% of the galaxies in an apparent magnitude limitedsample. Our conclusion is that interacting and merging galaxies, fromthe global star formation aspect, generally do not differ dramaticallyfrom scaled up versions of normal, isolated galaxies. No drastic changewith redshift is expected. One consequence is that galaxy formationprobably continued over a long period of time and did not peak at aspecific redshift. The effects of massive starbursts, like blowoutscaused by superwinds and cosmic reionization caused by starburstpopulations would also be less important than what is normally assumed.Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, LaSilla, Chile.

Cold gas and star formation in a merging galaxy sequence
We explore the evolution of the cold gas (molecular and neutralhydrogen) and star formation activity during galaxy interactions, usinga merging galaxy sequence comprising both pre- and post-mergercandidates. Data for this study come from the literature, but aresupplemented by some new radio observations presented here. First, weconfirm that the ratio of far-infrared luminosity to molecular hydrogenmass (LFIRM(H2); star formation efficiency)increases close to nuclear coalescence. After the merging of the twonuclei there is evidence that the star formation efficiency declinesagain to values typical of ellipticals. This trend can be attributed toM(H2) depletion arising from interaction induced starformation. However, there is significant scatter, likely to arise fromdifferences in the interaction details (e.g., disc-to-bulge ratio,geometry) of individual systems. Secondly, we find that the centralmolecular hydrogen surface density, ΣH2,increases close to the final stages of the merging of the two nuclei.Such a trend, indicating gas inflows caused by gravitationalinstabilities during the interaction, is also predicted by numericalsimulations. Furthermore, there is evidence for a decreasing fraction ofcold gas mass from early interacting systems to merger remnants,attributed to neutral hydrogen conversion into other forms (e.g., stars,hot gas) and molecular hydrogen depletion resulting from ongoing starformation. The evolution of the total-radio to blue-band luminosityratio, reflecting the total (disc and nucleus) star formation activity,is also investigated. Although this ratio is on average higher than thatfor isolated spirals, we find a marginal increase along the mergingsequence, attributed to the relative insensitivity of disc starformation to interactions. However, a similar result is also obtainedfor the nuclear radio emission, although galaxy interactions arebelieved to significantly affect the activity (star formation, AGN) inthe central galaxy regions. Nevertheless, the nuclear-radio to blue-bandluminosity ratio is significantly elevated compared with that forisolated spirals. Finally, we find that the FIR-radio flux ratiodistribution of interacting galaxies is consistent with star formationbeing the main energizing source.

The Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey - V. The catalogue
We present the radial velocities and blue, optical magnitudes for all ofthe galaxies within the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. Thiscatalogue consists of ~2500 galaxy redshifts to a limiting apparentmagnitude of B_J⋍17 mag, covering a ~1500-deg^2 area around theSouth Galactic Pole. The galaxies in this survey were selected from theEdinburgh/Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and were sampled, in order ofapparent magnitude, at a rate of one galaxy in every three. Thespectroscopy was performed at the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope inAustralia using the FLAIR multi-object spectrograph. We show that ourradial velocity measurements made with this instrument have an empiricalaccuracy of +/-150 km s^-1. The observational techniques and datareduction procedures used in the construction of this survey are alsodiscussed. This survey demonstrates that the UKST can be used to make athree-dimensional map of the large-scale galaxy distribution, via aredshift survey to b_J⋍17 mag, over a wide area of the sky.

Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.

Detection of Dynamical Structures Using Color Gradients in Galaxies
We describe a technique that uses radial color gradients in diskgalaxies to detect the presence of bulk noncircular motion or ellipticalorbits. In a disk galaxy with both a radial color gradient and non-circular motion, isochromes, or isocolor contours, should follow theshape of closed stellar orbits, and the ellipticity of the isophotesshould vary as a function of wavelength. A difference in the ellipticityof isochromes and the isophotes can be used to detect the presence ofnoncircular motion. A model galaxy is constructed which demonstratesthis phenomenon. The difference between isochrome and isophoteellipticity is directly related to the ellipticity of the potential.This provides a new way to measure the ellipticity of the dark matter inthe outer parts of galaxies. As an example, we apply this technique totwo dwarf galaxies, NGC 1800 and NGC 7764. We detect a bar in NGC 1800which has only previously been suggested from the H I velocity field. InNGC 7764 there is no color gradient along its bar, so we cannot detectnoncircular motion in this region; however, ellipticities observed in astar-forming ring at the end of the bar are consistent with this ringbeing located near the corotation resonance.

Global properties of dwarf galaxies. I. Galaxy sample and IRAS infrared flux-densities
We have selected a sample of 278 dwarf galaxies for which at least Bmagnitudes and preferably also optical colour information are available.For those galaxies that have no previously published IRAS fluxes, wehave used the IRAS database to extract fluxes or upper limits tosensitivity levels significantly better than those of the IRAS PointSource Catalog. New IRAS data include 79 galaxies detected in at leastone band, and 66 galaxies with good upper limits. In total, about 60% ofall dwarf galaxies in the sample now have been detected at 60/100μm.

Global properties of dwarf galaxies II. Colours and luminosities
We have used a previously determined sample of 278 dwarf galaxies formost of which B magnitudes, optical colours, HI fluxes and IRASflux-densities are known, in order to derive luminosities, colours andsurface brightnesses. Dwarf galaxy properties are compared to those of acontrol sample of 228 larger spiral galaxies. The dwarf galaxies have onaverage higher 60/100μm flux ratios and lower 12/25μm flux ratiosthan the spiral galaxies, indicating that the contribution of `cirrus'to the infrared emission from dwarf galaxies is relativelyinsignificant. In the dwarf galaxies, the 60/100μm flux ratioincreases with increasing optical blueness; spiral galaxies show theopposite. Dwarf galaxies with a low optical surface brightness have low100μm/HI ratios, but the converse is not true. Galaxies with high100μm/HI ratios (indicative of high dust-to-gas ratios) also havehigh FIR/B ratios as well as high 60/100μm flux-density ratios.Although this is true for both spiral and dwarf galaxies, at given100μm/HI ratios the dwarf galaxies have both a lower FIR/B ratio anda higher 60/100μm flux-density ratio. This result is of importance inthe interpretation of FIR/B - 60/100μm diagrams in terms of starformation activity.

Effect of Malmquist bias on correlation studies with IRAS data base
The relationships between galaxy properties in the sample of Trinchieriet al. (1989) are reexamined with corrections for Malmquist bias. Thelinear correlations are tested and linear regressions are fit forlog-log plots of L(FIR), L(H-alpha), and L(B) as well as ratios of thesequantities. The linear correlations for Malmquist bias are correctedusing the method of Verter (1988), in which each galaxy observation isweighted by the inverse of its sampling volume. The linear regressionsare corrected for Malmquist bias by a new method invented here in whicheach galaxy observation is weighted by its sampling volume. The resultsof correlation and regressions among the sample are significantlychanged in the anticipated sense that the corrected correlationconfidences are lower and the corrected slopes of the linear regressionsare lower. The elimination of Malmquist bias eliminates the nonlinearrise in luminosity that has caused some authors to hypothesizeadditional components of FIR emission.

Southern Sky Redshift Survey - The catalog
The catalog of radial velocities for galaxies which comprise thediameter-limited sample of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey ispresented. It consolidates the data of observations carried out at theLas Campanas Observatory, Observatorio Nacional, and South AfricanAstronomical Observatory. The criteria used for the sample selection aredescribed, as well as the observational procedures and the techniqueutilized to obtain the final radial velocities. The intercomparisonbetween radial velocity measurements from different telescopes indicatesthat the final data base is fairly homogeneous with a typical error ofabout 40 km/s. The sample is at present 90 percent complete, and themissing galaxies are predominantly objects with very low surfacebrightness for which it is very difficult to obtain optical redshifts.

A study of a complete sample of interacting galaxies. I - Presentation of the sample and the UBVRIJHK photometry
An investigation is presented on what effects galaxy-galaxy interactionhas on the properties of the involved galaxies. A magnitude limitedsample of interacting galaxies is presented, together with a controlsample of isolated galaxies. The Cousins UBVRI and Johnson JHKphotometry of all galaxies included in the samples is also presented.

Revised supernova rates in Shapley-Ames galaxies
Observations of 855 Shapley Ames galaxies made from November 1, 1980 toOctober 31, 1988, together with improved supernova luminosities, havebeen used to derive the frequency of supernovae of different types, andthe results are presented in tables. From a uniform database of 24supernovae discovered, the following SN rates are found, expressed in SNper century per 10 to the 10th L(B)(solar): SN Ia, 0.3; SN Ib, 0.3; andSN II, 1.0. The present data confirm the relatively high frequency of SNII in late-type galaxies that has been found by many previousinvestigators.

Far-infrared emission and star formation in spiral galaxies
The correlations between the emission in the far-IR, H-alpha, and bluein a sample of normal spiral galaxies are investigated. It is found thatthe luminosities in these three bands are all tightly correlated,although both the strength of the correlations and their functionaldependencies are a function of the galaxies' morphological types. Thebest-fit power laws to these correlations are different for thecomparison of different quantities and deviate significantly fromlinearity in some cases, implying the presence of additional emissionmechanisms not related to the general increase of luminosity withgalactic mass. Clear evidence is found of two independent effects in theincidence of warm far-IR emission in late-type spirals. One is aluminosity effect shown by the presence of excess far-IR relative toH-alpha or optical emission in the more luminous galaxies. The other isa dependence on widespread star-formation activity.

The preponderance of bar and ring features in starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei
A detailed study of the spiral galaxy NGC 4321 showed that the nuclearstar formation mechanism in this galaxy is very likely related to theorbits perturbation at the Inner Linblad Resonances. In order to testthe hypothesis that the same physical mechanism accounts generally forsuch activity in spiral galaxies, a morphological analysis of a sampleof starburst nuclei and active galactic nuclei (STB, AGN) as well as acontrol sample of normal galaxies has been carried out. It is found thatthe morphological type expected for starbursters like NGC 4321 (SAB(rs)or stronger), occurs at a much higher frequency in the sample of STBsand AGNs than in the control sample. The effect is stronger for STBsthan for AGNs. This provides strong evidences that active formation ofstars in the nuclei of spiral galaxies is linked to the perturbation oforbits at the Inner Linblad Resonances. This interpretation leads to thesuggestion that an effective nuclear starburst phase is an inhibitionmechanism to a more powerful type of nuclear activity like in AGNs.

The supernova rate in Shapley-Ames galaxies
A visual search for SNs in 748 Shapley-Ames galaxies during the 5-yearperiod from November 1, 1980 to October 31, 1985 has yielded SN rates of0.3h-squared, 0.4h-squared, and 1.1h-squared for objects of types Ia,Ib, and II, respectively. These data are judged to imply that Tammann's(1974, 1982) SN rates are probably too high by a factor of about 3. Fora Galactic luminosity of 2 x 10 to the 10th solar L(B), the predicted SNrates in the Milky Way system are 0.6h-squared, 0.8h-squared, and2.2h-squared/century, respectively, for the three aforementioned types.

Latel-type galaxies - Star formation rates
A simple method for determining star formation rates (SFRs) in externalgalaxies is presented which is based on surface photometry in one coloronly. The intensity distributions of 59 late-type spiral and irregulargalaxies were divided into two components each, one containing the lightof the smoothly distributed old disk population, the other containingthe light of the clumped extreme Population I. This makes it possible todetermine the ratios of the 'present' SFRs (for stars with ages lessthan 50 million yr) to the average SFRs. Among other results, this ratiois found to be higher in asymmetric galaxies than in symmetric ones.

Faint southern galaxies with H-alpha emission
A catalog of 113 emission line galaxies, selected by the presence ofH-alpha + N II forbidden line emission, is presented. The objects wereselected from an objective prism survey made with the ESO Schmidttelescope, using the (IIIaF + RG630) plate-filter combination.

The rate of star formation in normal disk galaxies
Quantitative estimates of the total star formation rate (SFR) in a largesample of field spiral and irregular galaxies have been obtained throughphotometry of the integrated H-alpha emission, and the photoionizationproperties of a stellar population have been modeled for a variety ofinitial mass function (IMF) choices. Excellent agreement with theobserved galaxy colors and H-alpha emission is obtained with modelsusing an IMF slope close to Salpeter's (1955) original value. Comparisonof the present SFRs with the remaining supply of interstellar gas yieldsconsumption time scales of only a few billion years in most cases, inagreement with the model estimates of Larson, Tinsley, and Caldwell(1980). It is possible that the present epoch is characterized by rapidchanges in the integrated properties and morphologies of disk galaxies.

A survey of H-alpha emission in normal galaxies
The combined results of photometric and spectrophotometric surveys ofH-alpha emission in 200 field and Virgo cluster galaxies are presented.In most spiral galaxies the emission is dominated by normal disk H IIregions, and consequently the integrated Balmer flux of a galaxy can beused as a quantitative index of its current OB star formation rate.Uncertainties due to instrumental effects, nuclear emission,forbidden-line N II emission, and extinction by dust, are evaluated. Theintegrated emission of a galaxy is strongly correlated with its Hubbletype and color, confirming the earlier conclusions of Cohen (1976).Emission among galaxies of a given type varies greatly, however, and inmost cases is due to a real dispersion in star formation activity. Thisactivity is only weakly correlated with galaxy luminosity or H Icontent, suggesting that some other parameter is more important.

H-alpha emission from the disks of spiral galaxies
Results are reported for observations of the amount of H-alpha emissionfrom the disks of 53 galaxies with mean major diameters less than 3arcmin. A correlation between B-V color and H-alpha emission is foundwhereby bluer galaxies of a given morphological type have greateremission in H-alpha. It is shown that the H-alpha emission originatesfrom discrete ordinary H II regions ionized by starlight and that theamount of emission depends on the proportion of hot to cool stars,rather than on the availability of gas. The number of H II regionsrequired to produce the observed emission is compared with the number ofH II regions in galaxies of various morphological types measureddirectly from photographs taken with H-alpha interference filters. Theratio of hot stars to cool ones corresponding to the observed range inB-V color is determined and found to agree well with a theoretical modelthat predicts B-V color as a function of stellar luminosity in a galaxy.
