A Sample of Field Ellipticals
Using well-defined selection criteria derived from Zaritsky et al.applied to the LEDA galaxy catalog, we have constructed a sample ofelliptical galaxies that can be taken to lie in the field. Such criteriacan easily be applied to theoretical simulations for direct comparisonwith observations. The variation of the number of ``isolated''ellipticals with selection criteria is also investigated. A preliminarystudy of the environment of the field ellipticals shows that, in themean, they are surrounded by a population of dwarf galaxies, out toprojected radii of at least 500 kpc, with a radial density profile ofr-0.6+/-0.2 and a luminosity function slope of α~-1.8.The results are compared and contrasted to the satellite populationaround isolated spiral galaxies.

Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-Type Galaxies: Spectroscopic Data
We present central velocity dispersions and Mg2 line indicesfor an all-sky sample of ~1178 elliptical and S0 galaxies, of which 984had no previous measures. This sample contains the largest set ofhomogeneous spectroscopic data for a uniform sample of ellipticalgalaxies in the nearby universe. These galaxies were observed as part ofthe ENEAR project, designed to study the peculiar motions and internalproperties of the local early-type galaxies. Using 523 repeatedobservations of 317 galaxies obtained during different runs, the dataare brought to a common zero point. These multiple observations, takenduring the many runs and different instrumental setups employed for thisproject, are used to derive statistical corrections to the data and arefound to be relatively small, typically <~5% of the velocitydispersion and 0.01 mag in the Mg2 line strength. Typicalerrors are about 8% in velocity dispersion and 0.01 mag inMg2, in good agreement with values published elsewhere.

Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-Type Galaxies: Circular-Aperture Photometry
We present R-band CCD photometry for 1332 early-type galaxies, observedas part of the ENEAR survey of peculiar motions using early-typegalaxies in the nearby universe. Circular apertures are used to tracethe surface brightness profiles, which are then fitted by atwo-component bulge-disk model. From the fits, we obtain the structuralparameters required to estimate galaxy distances using theDn-σ and fundamental plane relations. We find thatabout 12% of the galaxies are well represented by a pure r1/4law, while 87% are best fitted by a two-component model. There are 356repeated observations of 257 galaxies obtained during different runsthat are used to derive statistical corrections and bring the data to acommon system. We also use these repeated observations to estimate ourinternal errors. The accuracy of our measurements are tested by thecomparison of 354 galaxies in common with other authors. Typical errorsin our measurements are 0.011 dex for logDn, 0.064 dex forlogre, 0.086 mag arcsec-2 for<μe>, and 0.09 for mRC,comparable to those estimated by other authors. The photometric datareported here represent one of the largest high-quality and uniformall-sky samples currently available for early-type galaxies in thenearby universe, especially suitable for peculiar motion studies.Based on observations at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO),National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which is operated by theAssociation of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., undercooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF);European Southern Observatory (ESO); Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory(FLWO); and the MDM Observatory on Kitt Peak.

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability. The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Large-Scale Structure at Low Galactic Latitude
We have extended the CfA Redshift Survey to low galactic latitudes toinvestigate the relation between the Great Wall in the North GalacticCap and the Perseus-Pisces chain in the South Galactic Cap. We presentredshifts for 2020 galaxies in the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clustersof Galaxies (Zwicky et al. 1961-68, CGCG) in the following regions: 4^h^<= α <= 8^h^, 17^h^ <= α <= 20^h^, 0^deg^ <=δ <= 45^deg^. In these regions, the redshift catalogue includes1664 galaxies with B(0) <= 15.5 (of which 820 are newly measured) andis 97% complete. We also include redshifts for an additional 356galaxies in these regions with B(O) > 15.5; of these, 148 werepreviously unmeasured. The CGCG samples the galaxy distribution down tob_II_ = 10^deg^. In this paper, we discuss the acquisition and reductionof the spectra, and we examine the qualitative features of the redshiftdistribution. The Great Wall and the Perseus-Pisces chain are not simplyconnected across the Zone of Avoidance. These structures, which at firstappear to be coherent on scales of ~100 h^-1^ Mpc or more, actually formthe boundaries of neighboring voids of considerably smaller scale, approximately 50h^-1^ Mpc. The structures delineated by ouroptically-selected sample are qualitatively similar to those detected bythe far-infrared-selected IRAS 1.2 Jansky Survey (Fisher et al. 1995).Although the IRAS survey probes more deeply into the Zone of Avoidance, our optically-selected survey provides better sampling of structures atb_II_ >= 10^deg^.

Field star diffusion in globular clusters
We investigate a new interaction of globular clusters with galacticfield stars: the deceleration (by dynamical friction) of high-velocityfield stars diffusing through individual globular clusters. Thisfrictional interaction contributes to cluster heating and, inconjunction with disk shocking and other mechanisms, helps to regulatethe evolution of globular clusters. Moreover, penetrating field stars oflow relative velocity can even be captured by globular clusters. Ourcalculated rate of capture suggests that there is a modest population ofstars having an origin external to the clusters in which they nowreside. Intriguing candidates for this 'immigrant' population includesome blue stragglers and short-period pulsars.

Isophotal twisting in isolated elliptical galaxies
Luminosity, ellipticity, and position angle profiles of 43 ellipticalgalaxies selected from the UGC catalog are used to study isophotaltwisting not arising from the intrinsic structure of the object.Isolated galaxies have been chosen to avoid distortions of the isophotesdue to the occurrence of tidal effects of photometric overlapping withclose companions. It is demonstrated that isophotal twisting occurs inisolated galaxies with about the same frequency as for objects inrandomly selected samples. Objects having luminosity profiles close tothe exp 1/4 law show no twist of the isophotes within the errors, whereas any degree of twist is allowed when more complex luminosityprofiles are observed.
